We have been playing Jay Electronica’s music for some time now - and look forward to the full length album. One of the most enigmatic, talented and promising artists to emerge for some time. All the components are there for what should be an incredible LP, we already know that Nas will feature, but no doubt it will include some production and collaborations with some of Deviation’s favourite producers too.
At the last we heard it was due to be called "Abracadabra: Let There Be Light", due to be released sometime late 2008 or Early 2009 on Erykah Badu’s Control Freaq Recordings. Erykah famously set up the imprint on the basis of having heard Jay Electronica’s music and the wish to release it. One of the leading examples of the excitement and power created by internet mixtapes, Jay received over 30,000 direct downloads of "Act 1" which included Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind", with Jay rhyming over Jon Brion’s beat-less score to the film of the same name. He subsequently deleted the myspace page and started over.
So, here is the next installment in the mixtape series, "Attack of The Clones". Preview below or download it here, just remember to support and buy the finished LP as and when it drops. Track 6, "Couldron" seems to be ripped from the radio - see if you can recognise the jingles throughout and the voice at the beginning!

Dego & Kaidi Tatham are two of London Town’s most important musical visionaries, always having pioneered forward thinking soulful music across all tempos, never restrained by genre, only influenced by quality. Dego has been running 2000 Black Records for 10 years now - or at least it feels like it was somewhere around ‘98 when we first heard the "Dumped Funk" 12" on the label - a tune that still makes it to the record box from time to time. Kaidi Tatham - who possesses a musical genius and god given talent that makes many describe him as London’s Herbie Hancock - has been contributing the harmony and melody to much of the progressive club music to come out of the UK capital for the last decade. So it is fitting that after ten years of sporadic releases available only to specialist vinyl buyers (and those lucky enough to hear their various dub plates in the club over the years), that Dego & Kaidi should adopt the "2000 Black" moniker and present a collection of the recordings from the last few years available on a beautifully mastered CD.
Entitled "A Next Set A Rockers", the LP features regular collaborators on vocals including Face, Vanessa Freeman, Ty,Nadine Charles and Philly legend, Lady Alma. Finally seeing the light of day is the full vocal version of "Got Me Puzzled", arguably Dego & Kaidi’s most popular tune to date - the 12" version only featured the chorus but there has always been talk of a full vocal version being released. Also on the album is "Lost It" - made famous by Face’s live performances at 2000 Black shows, a new tune featuring Lady Alma "Move Over", and London boogie Jam "Simple Sacrifice" with the unmistakable sound of Kaidi’s old school synthesizer collection sounding so warm and strangely futuristic in contrast to so much of today’s cold and empty digital feel.
Currently released with limited paper and card sleeve in Japan via Third Ear Recordings, its possible to pick this up right away on Japanese Import. If you can wait though - it will be released in the UK on 2000 Black Records on 8th Sept 2008, both physical and digital formats.

You may have already seen the footage of Kanye bringing out Jay Z to do a preview verse on this at his last ‘Glow in the Dark’ show at Madison Square Gardens last week. Well, now its official. Here is the first cut from "The Bluprint 3" due to be released in December this year.
‘Dope Boy Fresh (Jockin Jay Z)’ is produced by Kanye West. Clearly this puts to bed Timbaland’s claim that he was to produce the whole album. In fact reliable sources indicate that Kanye West is gonna be producing the whole thing, with his mentor invited to join him behind the boards, the legendary and often overlooked Chicago producer, No I.D.
We have lost 2 legends in 2 days. Isaac Hayes has died aged 65, on 10 August, 2008.
He was found dead at his home in Memphis, Tennessee by his wife and is believed to have collapsed while running on a treadmill.
Isaac Hayes may have been best known in mainstream media for his contributions to ‘Shaft’ and ‘South Park’, but to us he will be remembered for timeless, influential breaks like the one above (’Ike’s Mood‘) and for pioneering a soul / jazz blend in the 60’s which eventually became a bluprint for the funk sound of the 70’s.
He is also one of the most heavily sampled artists accross all genres - apart from the countless hip hop artists to have used Hayes’ breaks, Portishead used Isaacs’s "Ike’s Rap II" as the main theme for arguably their most famous song "Glory Box" in 1994.
The new generation of popular musicians, he said, "could use a little more substance like we had in the day. They’re standing on our shoulders. Some of them don’t realize [it] because they sample me so much,"
Isaac Lee Hayes Jr was born in the city of Covington, Tennessee on 20 August, 1942. His parents both died when he was young, so he was raised by his grandparents.
He showed musical talent from an early age and was a self-taught pianist, flautist and saxophonist. He began working as a session musician at Stax Records in Memphis where he was a central figure of the burgeoning soul movement. He formed a productive writing partnership with David Porter and they wrote hits for Sam & Dave, most notably the classic Soul Man. He also worked as a producer for the label’s output which shaped the sound of Southern Soul with artists like Booker T, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.
Mr Hayes recorded his debut album, Presenting Isaac Hayes, in 1967 amid chaos within the Stax camp. Otis Reading had been killed in a plane crash and Stax’s parent company Atlantic Records had resolved to sell the label. In 1971, the theme from "Shaft" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme. Hayes won a third Grammy for pop instrumental performance with the title track to his 1972 "Black Moses" album.
He was married four times and had 12 children. His youngest child was born to his fourth wife Adjowa in 2006. He also had 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
